Awesome, yeah I think there is a way to get wikipedia to compute here, not sure how though, I'll see if I can find out. Anyway, yeah take any of those pics for articles. If I would have to advise you on what to do I would say give it a shot. I have a lot of fun exploring places off the beaten path, so far mostly northern Illinois, but there is more to come I am sure.A mcmurray 19:08, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- Try something like Wikipedia, that works.A mcmurray 23:22, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, the easiest way is adding w: in front of it. Like w:User:Carptrash leads to your Wikipedia userpage. You can also pipelink it, so it looks like User:Carptrash. :) --Ebyabe 00:45, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:45, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

Greetings Carptrash, I was just visiting Monks Mound last weekend and it appears to me that your photo of St. Louis as seen from the top of the mound is flipped. The Arch should be to the south (left) of the silver Edward Jones dome and most of the city skyscrapers. See this fixed version.
--DawnMarja (talk) 17:14, 21 September 2011 (UTC) Thanks for catching that. A lot of my pictures taken in the past were slides. They are easily reversed during the scanning process. I shudder to think how many more that there are like this, but immediately feel better knowing that you and others are out there, peeking over my shoulder. Good work. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 20:29, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
Your comment says photo taken from "Kvaran, Einar Einarsson, ‘’An Annotated Inventory of Outdoor Sculpture in Washtenaw County’’, Independent Study, Eastern Michigan University, 1989". Obviously the statue itself is in the public domain, but do you know the copyright status of this particular photograph? If that was the first publication, it's possible that the photograph is under copyright. Thanks, cmadler (talk) 14:01, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
- After you left me a talk-page note on en-wiki, I went to your user page and realized that the "taken from" is your own work! Perhaps you could clarify that on the photo description. (So many people call things "own work" when they've just scanned from an old book that I don't really trust it without further explanation...sad.) Thanks, cmadler (talk) 16:27, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
- i am not even sure how I just ended up here - but you've made goods points, and I am glad that I found them. I am often inclined to dwell on the fact that the Inventory mentioned abouve is mine because it is not exactly a published source. Howevrr I am sorry that I caused you to have to check and double check up on me. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 01:30, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Queen Victoria statue, Orange Walk Town, Belize.jpg[edit]
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Queen Victoria statue, Orange Walk Town, Belize.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

- Hi, you have to add a license template for your own fotograf to that image. I just replaced the bogus PD-URAA with FoP-Belize, but thats only for the statue. The license for your fotograf is missing. regards. --JuTa 08:51, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
- PS: A recommanded license is but there a a lot of other possibilities. --JuTa 08:54, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
Attribution[edit]
Don't know if I'm doing this right. Just signed up on Wikipedia.
I have a problem and will handle it however you wish. I used your photograph, "Puye Cliff Dwelings" in a book written by a friend that I just received from the printer. Your attribution was inadvertently left off and the photo is now attributed to "Photographed by authors", which is obviously not true. It will be expensive to correct this error but I will certainly do that if you wish. My friend, who is 87 years old, lives in Santa Fe and I was helping him with his book so the error was mine. I will handle this however you wish.
I hope I have put this in the proper place. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kenjames0322 (talk • contribs) 14:46, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, you put this is in the right place, but why don't you email me, , give me your name, the author's name and I am sure we can make everyone happy. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 17:22, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

Licenses for 3D images[edit]
Hi. Could you please provide a license for the photographs of 3D artwork? Per COM:ART#This does not apply to photographs of 3D works of art, these files should be licensed by the photographer. While this to the files which ToBeFree uploaded, it also applies to any of your uploads.
I can do a mass tagging if you would prefer; just give me the license and the assurance that you are the photographer, and I will add it. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:35, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
- Yorùbá: Magog the OgreIt has been a strange day (the day after my 70th birthday). I saw that a bunch of my pictures were tagged, or something, I assume these are the ones that you are referring to. I am not sure (or am completely clueless) as to what the "license" is but I can assure you that I am the photographer of all the 3D art works involved. It is odd to me because earlier this evening I was looking at your catalog of maps here, remembering when you were kind enough to do a map for me years ago and thinking about another map project that I am working on and wondering how you might work into it. Now this. SO anyway, is my saying that I am the photographer the licenses that you need? Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 05:03, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
- The two are separate issues, actually. For the issue above, I am saying a lot of images don't have a proper license, since PD-US, PD-1923 doesn't qualify for photographs of old things. Could you please release them under a Wikimedia-compatible license? If so, feel free to update the images, or I will do it for you if you'd prefer. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:10, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
- Well I would appreciate it if you did it, I am not sure where to do it (on the file page, probably) or what to change it to since I don't understand what a "a Wikimedia-compatible license" is. Carptrash (talk) 15:48, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
- Are you OK with cc-by-sa-4.0? Sorry again for the confusion. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:41, 17 April 2018 (UTC)

- I am not sure what the 1938 German copyright laws say, or modern ones for that matter. The two pictures presented look to be from the same negative, but one is dated 1940 and the other 1938. I am pretty sure about the latter date because I scanned it from a 1938 book. Carptrash (talk) 15:04, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Audrey Munson Barn Star Maiden Award.jpg[edit]
This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Audrey Munson Barn Star Maiden Award.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |
