Hello, Levdr1lp!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:Rover-WMMS billboard.jpg. It only accepts free content, which is images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. For more information, please read Commons:Derivative works and Commons:Freedom of panorama. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk. The file you added has been deleted. If you believe that this file was not a derivative work of a non-free work, you may request undeletion.

File:WMMS-HD2, W256BT logo.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thank you! Levdr1lp / talk 00:32, 18 January 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

you reverted my edit?[edit]

File:WMMS Presents Cat Stevens - 1976 print ad.jpg

You reverted my edit , why? Pallap (talk) 20:59, 18 January 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Pallap: I think I made my reasons clear in the edit summary. Levdr1lp / talk 18:09, 23 January 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Could you expand upon your legal theory given that 90% of your uploads are unmodified copies of others' logos? -- DanielPenfield (talk) 08:10, 16 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@DanielPenfield: Consider reviewing Threshold of originality and Public domain. Levdr1lp / talk 18:31, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
In other words, when you copy it wholesale and upload it, it's automatically "just a bunch of lines and letters that anyone could come up with". But when I photograph a building to which the owner has affixed a logo, then the entire scene--street, sidewalk, clouds in the sky--is automatically "a precious work of originality." -- DanielPenfield (talk) 10:52, 21 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DanielPenfield: Was your upload deleted? No, because an administrator concluded that the "PBS Kids" logo, while non-free, is sufficiently small to qualify as De minimis. If the logo covered a larger portion of the image, then it very well may have been deleted (see Commons:Derivative works for a detailed explanation). As for my own uploads and why I chose to upload them, again, I suggest you either review the links I already posted above, or review this list of PD licenses for images which fall within the scope of the Commons. Levdr1lp / talk 06:59, 24 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry! I forgot that you are the ultimate authority as to what is and is not copyrightable. Therefore, anything you upload by your command "consists of simple geometric shapes and/or text" and therefore is automatically not copyrightable because it was uploaded by His Copyright Majesty. But when I upload a picture of a building with a logo that "consists of simple geometric shapes and/or text" that logo is automatically copyrightable and copyrighted because I am a lesser creature than His Copyright Majesty. -- DanielPenfield (talk) 01:03, 25 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DanielPenfield: Look, I thought your upload was possibly a copyright violation, so I nominated it for deletion. But an administrator decided to keep it. So what's the problem here? Files get nominated for deletion every day; some are deleted, others are kept. Don't take it personally, and please at least try to AGF. Feel free to stop the name calling while you're at it. Levdr1lp / talk 04:21, 25 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, Your Copyright Majesty! May every peasant bow to Your Imperial Wishes for You are the Ultimate Authority on What Is and What Is Not Copyrightable! File:PBS KIDS.png -- DanielPenfield (talk) 07:37, 25 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DanieldPenfield: Thank you for bringing that upload to my attention. Levdr1lp / talk 06:42, 26 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Trucker7212 Uh, thanks for the info. Could you please share why you're telling me this? Levdr1lp / talk 02:56, 1 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Pay attention to copyright
File:WOSU-TV logo.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

  • This file is a copyright violation for the following reason: This logo contains the PBS logo, which has been determined to be non-free on its own.
Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
