Blues Trail markers[edit]
Hi there. I noticed this deletion discussion. Where is the rule about these markers? I'm not sure how they fall under the umbrella of public art. Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 03:18, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you for asking. Freedom of panorama is a rule that liberalizes copyright laws in certain situations. By default, "Authors of literary and artistic works protected by this Convention shall have the exclusive right of authorizing the reproduction of these works, in any manner or form." See Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#Legal_status_of_pictures. Reproducing copyrighted text in the form of an image is prohibited by default here, even if it is located in public. In the United States, an exception is made for buildings only. See Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#United_States. This exception does not apply to art or text in public places. - I've read the policy many times but never thought about how it would impact on photos of public text. That's a lot of images, but the law is the law. Thanks for the info. Cheers. Magnolia677 (talk) 16:21, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
I am concerned about the status of this image. AP certainly seems to feel the image remains copyrighted. Further, as the US Copyright Office notes, "Works registered prior to 1978 may be found only in the Copyright Public Records Reading Room." Certainly this would have been registered prior to 1978, and I seriously doubt AP would have overlooked registering such an important picture. It may have also been renewed before 1978. Thus, records for such renewals would not necessarily be available online. Proving a negative is difficult. I think the best course of action here is to contact the Associated Press to confirm the copyright status of the image. Pending such information, I've removed the speedy tag from the image on en.wikipedia. Lastly, the image was not made in Myanmar, though it was tagged as pd-myanmar. I've removed that. --Hammersoft (talk) 04:42, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Hammersoft: Records prior to 1978 are not digitized, but this had to be renewed in the 28th year, not earlier. That was 1991, so the renewal would be digitized. Also, good note on the source country tag. I've updated it. Ramaksoud2000 (Talk to me) 04:55, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- Note to future self: Discussion continued at Commons:Village_pump/Copyright#File:Th.C3.ADch_Qu.E1.BA.A3ng_.C4.90.E1.BB.A9c_self-immolation.jpg. Ramaksoud2000 (Talk to me) 05:15, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- I appreciate all the work you've done on this. The image being such a famous one, we have all the more impetus to get this one right. I think your work sustains this. Bravo! --Hammersoft (talk) 17:48, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- Of course. I certainly appreciate your helpful questions as well! Take care, Ramaksoud2000 (Talk to me) 17:57, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
Georgia historical markers[edit]
Greetings: When you get the OTRS referenced in VPC today, please be very sure that the only images restored were actually created by State of Georgia and the historical society. Some of the ones which were deleted as part of that group were put up by a Church and the uploader doesn't seem to understand that the church has nothing to do with state of Georgia. Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 15:30, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Ellin Beltz: I am neither an admin not an OTRS volunteer, so I have no control over which images are restored. I directed the user to OTRS because I trust that the volunteers will be able to figure out the exact issue you're describing. Ramaksoud2000 (Talk to me) 15:34, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
- Bummer: I was hoping you would work through the process with him. We've been pushing him to OTRS for days, but being ignored with piles of dialog - I finally archived it all off my page. No worries, as you say, some of the OTRS are fully awake. Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 15:36, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

Your VFC installation method is deprecated[edit]
Hello Ramaksoud2000, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Thanks! --VFC devs (q) 16:23, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
