Please help replace this outdated license[edit]
Hello!
Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license {{PD}}. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.
The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding {{PD-self}} if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.
Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 17:34, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

By popular demand, error reporting is here! I'm just letting you know personally since you've been involved in one of the threads related to errors encountered in the NARA catalog. If you can add error reports to that page from now on, we'll have an easier time relaying them to the NARA digital description staff, and we'll be able to track our progress. Let me know if you have any problems using the page; I already added one report as an example. Providing corrections for mistakes in the online catalog is one of the best ways we can show demonstrable benefits to the institution, and you'll be helping all the other users of the archives, so it's really useful. Thanks! Dominic (talk) 23:47, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
Hair pipe[edit]

Thanks for your error report![edit]
On behalf of the US National Archives, I'd like to thank you for reporting the error you found in their catalog records; your report is now archived. The change has been applied to NARA's catalog by a staff member (see [1], [2], [3], [4]), and I have updated the Commons image descriptions accordingly. Work like yours is valuable because you are helping to improve the quality of NARA's metadata for all its users, and, by adding value back to NARA's holdings, we can demonstrate the usefulness to them and others of contributing content to Commons. Thanks! Dominic (talk) 18:35, 7 December 2011 (UTC) |

Please don't edit war -- discussion is much easier.
As I said in my edit comment,Category:United States lightship Nantucket (LV-112) is not valid for this image because this is not LV-112. It is, as it says in the image description, WLV-612, which is a very different vessel. LV-112 has never been at Manhattan and does not look like this -- I know LV-112 very well, because I see her almost every day from a distance of twenty feet or so.
Among the most obvious differences are the mast and deckhouse arrangements. On 112, the foremast is in the middle of the forward deckhouse and the after mast is forward of the after deckhouse. There is a third deckhouse between the other two. As shown in the subject image, on 612, the forward mast is forward of the single deckhouse and the after mast is aft of it. . Jim . . . . Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,

Yarn swifts[edit]
Hallo,
What do you mean with yarn swifts? I never heard this expression before and I can't find it in the textile definitions of Centexbel. I see on the pictures mostly spinning wheels and that written in the text too.
Gerrit41 (talk) 17:37, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
- The swift (specific kinds of yarn winders) is the cage-like device that yarn is wound onto from the spinning wheel's bobbin to make it into skeins of yarn. There are three broad types of yarn winders: ball winder, Turkish drop spindles and nostepindes make balls of yarn, swifts (umbrella swifts, squirrel cage swifts, clock reels) make skeins, and the handheld yarn winders called a niddy noddy or kniddy-knoddy which also produce skeins but with no mechanical parts. See the English Wikipedia article: [5] Rmhermen (talk) 04:00, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. Can you also explain the differences between the swifts and the weasels and reels?

Category:South Manitou Island Lighthouse[edit]
I see you have just added Category:Lighthouses in Michigan to this and 13 others.
Please note that all of these are in Category:Lighthouses on the National Register of Historic Places in Michigan, which is itself in Category:Lighthouses in Michigan.
It's over-categorization to add the second category. I have removed them all from Category:Lighthouses in Michigan. . Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 19:53, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
- No it isn't. There probably isn't any lighthouse not on that register (and there is nothing special about it that should outrank other methods) It is unhelpful to hide them under multiple levels of naming. Many of the ones I didn't do were already in both categories. When I look at lighthouses in Michigan that is what I should find - not have to navigate through multiple alternate naming subcats systems. Right now I have to find some in Lighthouses, some in National register, some in by county. Rmhermen (talk) 02:07, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
- I'm sorry but you're wrong. I agree that doing as policy requires can be a royal nuisance. The category system, as we define it, inevitably does just what you complain about -- it makes it necessary to visit several cats to see all of the images that relate to a particular general subject. Nonetheless, the policy is clear -- it even has its own illustration.
- The best solution in this case is a gallery such as Lighthouses in Maine.
- I don't understand your final comment -- all lighthouses in Michigan should be in either Category:Lighthouses in Michigan or Category:Lighthouses on the National Register of Historic Places in Michigan. If that is not true, then it needs to be fixed.

More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.Elisfkc (talk) 03:26, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
